CBSE to promote all students of classes 9th and 11th classes

CBSE directed schools to promote all students of classes 9th and 11th to the next grade 10th and 12th irrespective of any conditions. Till now schools were directed to promote students on the basis of internal assessment, in combination with online and offline assessments. But to the relief of students now irrespective of cumulative results all students will be promoted to the next grade without any examination and none will be failed at all.

Assessment Formula till now

Due to COVID 19 lockdown situation, many examinations in schools were pending but on the 1st of April, CBSE asked all students from 1st to 8th to be promoted to the next class but directed to evaluate students of classes 9th and 11th on internal school assessment and then promote. This has raised many questions from the parents of the wards of  9th and 11th grades. The scheme of assessment was not very clear to many parents hence many of them approached schools apprehensive about their child’s future.

Earlier Board has recommended schools to consider internal assessment, project work, periodic tests, term exams, etc. This implies that the CBSE Schools will use the progress made by the students in their academic studies through the half-yearly examinations, quarterly tests and any tests held before and also consider students other additional factors such as project work, assignments submitted throughout the year for promotion to next grade.

According to earlier directions, primarily, the promotion was dependent on the academic performance of the student in any way assessed in school and was not to be limited to only the annual exam.

Parents Concern

Parents were highly concerned about these ways of assessments as many students might not have performed to their best in a few of the internal assessments. Students don’t really put their best foot forward when it comes to quarterly exams and term exams or even for project work and other aspects related to internal assessment. And then many look forward to annual exams to succeed, so what about the fate of such students, who are not eligible for promotion based on internal assessment.

Coordinator of Patna CBSE regional office, Rajiv Ranjan verbalised that there were schools that did not promote students to the next grade. And finally, after the directions of CBSE, all passed or failed students of classes 9th and 11th have also been promoted to the next grades.
